rainbow!

labor day weekend was already a whole week ago, and so much has happened in that time. we went to mormor and morfar's house with the goal of getting to the county fair. and we did go to the fair, but first we went to one of my favorite places in the world: my mom's garden. she had discovered a beautiful and massive caterpillar on one of her trees (fig tree? i can't remember) and wanted to show him to us. ramona named him rainbow, and we were awed by his size and eating capabilities.

 

and now, just a week later, my mom tells me that rainbow has gone down the trunk of the tree and formed a chrysalis that looks just like a gross hairball. and if we're right, he's a cecropia silk moth caterpillar, and will stay in his little hairball chrysalis until the first 2 warm weeks of next summer, and then emerge as a furry massive beauty, like this:


amazing.

i'm considering camping in her garden in may and june, awaiting this blessed event. little rainbow is growing up so quickly.
