we waited alllll yeeeearrrr for school to go back to in person, and then it did....for 2 months. despite the short in-person attendance year, fatigue was high after all that virtual learning, and these kids were ready for the end of the year. the usual high emotions hit: they really like school, too, and often feel really sad saying goodbye to teachers and friends. but there is also giddy joy at the end of the year, and this year was no different.
the second-to-last day, the usual marquette elementary bike gang engaged in the time honored (read: many generations in the 'hood) tradition to canoe-to-school. we departed from our house at 7 am, and paddled to the beach, portaged around the closed locks, and made it down the river for an on-time school day arrival. a few parents met the kids at the end of the day and helped paddle home on the same route.
the morning in stages:
assembling
launching
portage over the locks
down the river to school
afternoon assembling of the troops
and a triumphant return home
and the last day? well, the bike gang biked, fueled by donuts at penelope's house.
i got a picture of ramona on her last day of elementary school (WHAT HOW?) but james was too fast for me and i never got the last day picture of that speedster. ah well. running into school too quickly is a pretty good trade off for not getting a posed photograph.
welcome, summer.
its macarena time.
