iowa roadtrip: day one

we borrowed some mountain bikes, grabbed the kitty, and drove to iowa.

because it was thanksgiving, everything was closed and quiet, and the road was empty. we made it to our mountain biking destination in just 3 hours, only to find that they, too, were closed for wet conditions. the trails at interstate power bike trails looked really really good and it was with heavy hearts that we drove away without biking. but soon we found another park--FDR--just behind a little petting zoo outside dubuque. the trails were great, but very hard, and weirdly had a ton of baked goods on the trails. we worked pretty hard out there, and i think every single one of us fell off our bikes at one point.

when we were all spent, we packed up and headed to our campsite along the mississippi river in bellevue state park. we arrived in the cold snowless dark, foraged for sticks, made some hot dogs over the fire, and hit the cozy camper van beds with our sweet little aretha cat.

after day one we were all in love with the pleasure and novelty of having a cat on the road with us, with mountain biking, and with a the camper van.
