i know christmas really isn't on anyone's mind right now, but laura and i were comparing notes on holidays and cultural practices and traditions...and i suddenly remembered a story i'd read about how barcelona christmas always has the "poop log" as a central part of the decor. she laughed when i asked her about it, and said "yes, of course, and we all have el caganer in the belen."
so: "el caganer" translates to "the pooper, the shitter" and the "belen" is bethlehem, or used in place of "nativity scene" or "creche".
