through hiking heroes

sometimes i daydream about alternative possible realities, or maybe even what we might do in retirement...and often through hiking (or long distance hiking) pops into my mind. maybe the appalachian trail? or the ice age trail? or maybe the north country trail (which david himself helped to work on a small section in college)?
a friend and former coworker molly did the appalachian trail once, all by herself. in the first few days, she met a guy from germany named martin. she didn't speak german, he didn't speak english, but they hiked side by side for 4 months from georgia to maine. when it was over, they went their separate ways and back to real life, but stayed in touch. a year later, she moved to germany, they got married, and now they are hiking the continental divide trail, from mexico to canada, and they are amazing.
