friend day

facebook is _______.....ugh. fill in the blank. it is an echo chamber. it is a social calendar. it is a way to stay connected. it is a platform for advertising. it is, it is, it is.
it is something i use much less. i have taken it off my phone. but i can't let it go, not totally, for the social connection it provides. 
this weekend, facebook seemed downright ridiculous when it announced to users that it was "friend day." i think "friend day" was friday. i'll tell you, friend day on facebook feels an awful lot like hallmark promoting "sweetest day." i have no use for sweetest day.
HOWEVER, griping aside, you know what was happening when i found out it was "friend day"?
i was sitting in my friend's living room. my dear friend from college, kate, who now lives around the corner from me. and there in the living room was our other dear friend, jackie, who was my freshman year roommate in the dorms. jackie's brother was there. we were surrounded by good friends, and had just prior to that been in my own living room with my own BFF-for-life, david. quite a friend day.



later, we watched the super bowl together,


and we forced our kids to sit together, too.


that same weekend, i went to stay overnight with some other wonderful friends at a cozy lakehouse, with dinner out at a supper club, and time to spend together talking and re-connecting without the usual distraction of our children. it was lovely.


so, yeah. facebook makes me crazy. "friends day" isn't a real holiday, and feels stupid, but days spent with friends are special and i hold them closely in my heart. life is made up of people. it's good to have love of good people radiating around you. i am so thankful for my people.
