appalachia day 8: ohio and michigan, so uhh, not appalachia

it didn't take long to drive from pittsburgh to cuyahoga valley national park. we couldn't find a cool national sign because either we just came in the wrong way, or there isn't one, and that would make sense because this has been a national recreation area for a long while before it was a park, and is surrounded by communities all over the borders of the park. the park is centered around the ohio erie canal towpath, and there is a lot of learning to be done at this park about locks, dams, digging, canals, the erie canal and this ohio canal, and the history of expansion of the american west and middle west.

we did most exploring by bike rental.

then we went on to ann arbor, where david showed us around the university of michigan campus, which is pretty and is strikingly reminiscent of another big ten campus i know and love.

but they have a grassy wave field, and that is super cool.

we stopped by the michigan capitol building in east lansing to stamp the capitol collection book, and then we were on our way to nana and papa's house in holland.
