next day, we zipped through the tiny corners of west viriginia and maryland to reach pennsylvania, and we chewed up so much 3G data trying to get songs to listen to that were geographically relevant. lots of john denver, you guys, followed by a weird song about cannibalism in a mine collapse, and included the fresh prince as we rolled into pittsburgh (pittsburgh is what he meant by west philadelphia, right?).
we went directly to a highly recommended pittsburgh lunch at di'anoia's, where the italian food is super good. we also discovered that it was negroni week, so obviously david got a lunch negroni, and i went with the not-cool-anymore aperol spritzer. the kids got blood orange drinks, and suddenly, we basically had orange drinks all around. (orange whip? orange whip? 3 orange whips.)
driving through pittsburgh is to feel like you can peer through the entire length of the last 100 years, all at once.
then we rode this tram up the hillside. don't worry, family members afraid of heights, cramped spaces, and locked doors: this thing has it all and is well over 100 years old! fun!
those with fears (all three of these cute faces) handled themselves very well in that sweltering tram.
here comes the tram (err, car? funicular?), up the steep rail, doing it every day since 1877
views at the top. pro tip: there is also ice cream at the top.
it was so hot that day that any plans of "lets just walk around the city" were immediately jettisoned by melting kids. instead, we headed over the warhol museum for the air conditioning, the education, the art. it was so fun, and a very interactive museum. plus, elvis, so you know james was happy.
our airbnb was so insanely awesome, and located in lawrenceville. after oohing and aahing at our place for the night (and reminding the kids, urgently, over and over not to touch the art) we set out just after the rain to find some saturday night dinner.
we had tacos, and on the walk back, i couldn't stop marveling at how cute the houses are. sheesh, i liked the feel of this city.
there goes david! bye, david.
