weekend magic

weekends are the best. david is around, the kids are happy to have access to both of us, and when we spend a summer weekend at home it feels like a rare gift. last weekend was truly a gift:

our dear old buddies from long long ago and now far far away (but less far away than they used to be) came for a friday night visit, in which we employed all our weird bikes,

and then we made david wear his racing banana suit while sharing an after-dinner glass of wine. if this doesn't get them to sign up for the birkie asap, i don't know what will.

the next day was beautiful out, and felt much more like early september than late july. there IS a difference, even when the temperature is the same. so we packed up these cool dudes, and headed for devil's lake.

it turns out the rest of wisconsin and a large portion of illinois had the same idea, so we had to park on the south end (read: less good end) and hike along the east bluff trail to get to the beach, the snacks, and our friends.

but first we jumped across the railroad tracks.

and then we hiked up up up to the top of the bluff.

up on the bluff edge, my selfie skills were failing,

so a stranger took pity on us and offered to take a family picture.

at the end of the hike, we were rewarded with a swim with dear friends.

there was some swimsuit-boulder-scrambling, done by this pretty awesome kid.

and when the day came to close and the 5:30 pm shadows started to feel longer than they should in july, we walked back to the car along the tracks.

james took a break to think. that's what he said.

at home, we camped. to be clear, david and the kids camped, and i slept in the house because we don't all fit in the backpacking tent anymore.

the next day, soccer start james scored his team's only goal, downed some water like a boss,

and was the sneakiest member of his team during the team cheer.

later, backyard movie...

and to close out a perfect evening, we re-imagined the tent as a mosquito-prevention hut from which to watch The Princess and the Frog in the evening air.
