a weekend in door county

here's the problem with a beautiful long weekend in door county in june: it's so beautiful and there is so much to do that you (well, me) take about a million pictures. we spent 3 full days in one of wisconsin's most beautiful counties, visited 3 county parks, 3 state parks, and all the little cities we could get to.
let's take this day by day, as we do.

upon arrival, we went directly to cave point county park on the eastern side of the peninsula, facing into lake michigan. we teetered on the rocky edge of land, hiked about on some glorious trails into whitefish dunes state park, and tiptoed through the beach rock cairns.

we even met a butterfly on the path,

and briefly glimpsed a zen-like side of james.

after the hiking and oohing and aahing at the views, we drove a few miles into bailey's harbor to have 1.) ice cream

2.) coffee at the most adorable coffee shop (bearded heart--check it out)

3.) and then we popped next door for some tastes of brew at the door county brewing company.

and after all the adventure and beverages, we drove across the county to the green bay side of door county to get the cute little keys to our cute little cottage at the alpine resort in egg harbor. this place is magical, and our cabin (the "michigan") was perfect.

the grounds were too enticing to not explore immediately, so explore we did. check out the very sweet old main building at the alpine resort, home to hotel rooms, a restaurant, party rooms, game rooms, a waterfront deck, and a bar tended by the front desk staff (who also happen to be the 70-to-80 year old cousins and their spouses who own the joint).

we skipped the bar and hit up the tennis courts with these tennis pros,

and then the pool.

and then it was dinnertime. (honestly, it was WAY after dinner time, but we were on vacation schedule so, you know, whatever). we cleaned up and strolled over the restaurant

where tired children nearly wilted under the strain of waiting for the bad bad slow service at this old run down place.

a little food perked us up for a spectacular sunset

perfect summer vacation day.
