we are going camping tomorrow night, and for the first time since having children, we will not be sleeping in the giant ancestral canvas tent. that staple family tent has served us well, and survived well beyond expectation, but her retirement date has arrived. no more leaking rain, no more vent poles that barely come together, no more akuminum poles leaving black stains and smudges on everything, no more heaving around of a 50 pound tent while packing and unpacking. it's a good tent, for sure, but we just got an even better one. welcome back, camping season.

I bought that tent 38 years ago for Jim's 36th birthday. It was first used at Hofmaster State Park by Jim, Becky and Libby on the first weekend David was home from the hospital. It served our family well on many camping trips throughout Northern Michigan and David and I used it at Grand Haven when we were into roller blading and kite flying. It blew down the beach in a storm one night, but we patched it up, got new poles and up she went.
I was happy that David took it with him when he left home and used it camping with his own family. I don't think there are many 38 year old canvas tents out there. It served it's purpose well. Rest in Peace.
