we almost never skate on the big lakes in madison. they are slow to freeze, usually have bumpy and snowy ice, are windy, and just not as easy as the city maintained rinks in the park. but this week, right before a snowstorm arrived, we trekked to nearly the middle of lake mendota and discovered some smooth, flat, snowless, black ice. it was gorgeous.

How can you tell where the ice is thick enough? Does the whole lake freeze over?
