wildlife

we've had lots of adventures lately, and many of them involve animals.

we've been to the aldo leopold nature center in monona, just east of madison. it's hard to believe that this protected marshland has existed peacefully here, a few miles down the road, all this time and only now i've learned about it. the kids and myself visited with some super wonderful new neighbor friends and their sweet kiddos. mom friends, new kid friends, hiking, and scientific observation. what a nice way to spend a sunny wednesday.

peeking for fish,

and close encounters with a nesting pair of sandhill cranes and their tiny baby. do you see that tiny orange fuzz ball in the tall grass behind the cranes? yep. that's a baby.

a week later, same friends, new adventure. we found a pair of frogs in a pond at olbrich gardens. all the young observes think they might have been wrestling. the adult observes suspect the frogs might have been engaged in a more adult behavior.

and then, to top it all off, i had a close encounter with a most endearing family of foxes in the middle of silent sunny beautiful saturday morning run through campus. i guess these foxes are local campus celebrities. i could hardly tear myself away from the playful babies and peaceful sun bathing mother after a full 10 minutes of standing, staring, and laughing at them (and, admittedly, taking a zillion pictures of them.

and then, of course, there's my favorite animal. and trust me when i say that he's part of the wildlife around here.
