preschool heroics

last week, the house next to ramona's school had a bit of an upstairs fire. the fire department was called, the fire was put out, and no one was home so no one was injured. the drama happened not at the site of the fire (as far as our family was concerned; i'm sure the displaced residents are experiencing their own drama....), but over in the playground next door. this is ramona's account of the event:

"i was playing with maple [friend] way way back in the woods, and we saw big flames and fire! we went running and said "haylee! haylee! [teacher] there's a fire!" and haylee said "oh really? a pretend fire or a real fire?" and we said "a real fire!" and haylee came and looked and saw the fire and said "everyone inside!!" and then haylee called...ummm...nine-ummm-one....ummm...nine-one......one and then the firemen came and they parked in our driveway and the mommies and daddies with the cars in the parking lot were trapped and they couldn't get out and me and daddy had to carry our bikes through the school!!!! so we could leave on the side walk!"

so, she's pretty much a hero. she saw the flames, alerted the authorities, and then escaped unharmed by bike.

here's the smoke rising from the second floor of the adjacent house, behind the school

and the firetrucks outside the school (that's her school, in brick, at the left) at the street side of the school.

quite a way to end a day at preschool.

How exciting! I'd love to hear her tell about it.
