homer hanky swaddle

each year the world series starts in october, and i get a little wave of childhood nostalgia. this year, it's particularly strong: the tigers are in the series and, subsequently, the staple household has focused more attention on baseball that usual this fall.

my nostalgia? watching kirby puckett and the twins in the world series in 1987, sitting on the floor with my dad. i had my very own homer hanky to wave at the tv. and my favorite part of the memory? fresh snow on the ground outside.  (that is the part of the memory that always makes me think that the world series is played in the winter).

i always thought that i had maybe created some bits of this cozy memory (was there really snow? did i really have a homer hanky the first year they were available?), but thanks to the magic of the internet, it is confirmed that the first snowfall of 1987 was on october 20, which was the date of game 3. and that homer hanky is up in ramona's room right now, tightly swaddled around her doll, baby hildy. the last time i swaddled hildy at ramona's request, i noticed the year on the homer hanky: 1987.

man, i love that memory. it makes me really like the world series, no matter who is playing. go tigers!

i was just telling jeffery about homer hankies and the tigers/twins series. i always associate those memories with the rocking chair that dad would sit in (the short one with the section of wicker that was loose). definitely the high point of my baseball awareness. i think i can still recall the twins starting lineup and positions played. gagne, hrbek, puckett, a redhead who reminded me of a fox, viola... ok enough. also interesting that this post triggered a comment. go giants, though.
