cherry blossoms!

the cherry blossoms are blooming in washington, d.c., and the cherry blossom festival is in full swing. i was in d.c. with friends for a birthday party, and we took some time to stop and smell the cherry blossoms.

cherry trees hang across the sidewalk to the jefferson memorial.
even the white house has some blooming member of the pink tree family.

paddle boaters celebrate cherry blossoms by boating in the rain.

please do not pick the blossoms.
hooray! cherry blossoms!

segway tours

is this really the best way to take a guided tour of washington, d.c.? these folks thought so. i think they look a little dorky.

thawing monona

today is the first saturday of spring. the ice on lake monona is barely hanging on. the cracks that zig-zag about the lake are very apparent on the thinning ice. this prominent fissure runs clear across the lake.

the sun reflects off a thin strip of water flowing between the monona terrace and the retreating ice.

live like you mean it!

wisconsin has got a new logo and slogan, "live like you mean it." it's replacing the previous slogan "life's so good," which replaced the previous slogan "you're among friends." i still like "you're among friends" the best. i'm definitely happy about the cartwheel guy. it's possible he's a handstand guy, but i prefer cartwheels, so i'm going with cartwheel guy.

the new slogan and logo do make wisconsin seem both fit, and fun. oddly, a quick google search reveals that "live like you mean it" used to be bacardi's slogan. it does seem a little strange for a state to adopt a slogan from a liquor, but oh well.

marta and i made our way down to the memorial union this afternoon to enjoy some spring-like weather. while strolling through our union's hallowed halls, we happened upon this plaque listing the student governments from 1974 and 1976. notice anyone special?

birding in naples

we spent a long weekend in naples, florida, visiting the naples staples. while most of the weekend was spent eating and sunning ourselves poolside, our photographs from the weekend were decidedly ornithological in nature.

the first bird sighting was an unusual duck with a suspected facial parasite. we spotted him just outside the staples' condo.

our next sighting was on this fancy collier county manhole cover. behold, the florida turkey!

a trip to the naples pier yielded views of pelican dive-bombing for fish in the warm gulf waters.

here, a birder in action, sets out from the silver oaks condo association.

nothing brings a father-in-law and a daughter-in-law together like bird watching from the lanai.

likewise for mother and son (viewing a nesting barred owl).

we were greeted with the promise of bird sightings at the corkscrew swamp sanctuary.

many beautiful birds live within the sanctuary, protected by the national audubon society.

a beautiful bird perches precariously above awaiting alligators.

let us not forget the most important bird of all: the early bird special. here we are, a group of inadvertent birders, capping the weekend after a delicious meal.

a good time was had.

east jordan

this past weekend we went down to glen ellyn, il for some family time with my sisters and their clans. we took an excursion to the morton arboretum. sterling morton is the founder of arbor day and the inventor of salt.

we explored several labyrinths,

enjoyed the sculptures,

and went on a gnome search.

i found this manhole cover in the arboretum. it was made at the east jordan iron works in east jordan, mi.

if you keep you eyes on the ground, you'll actually find a lot of manhole covers from east jordan. it's the neenah of michigan.
*denver and prescott photos are from the interwebs

a lovely time was had.

glow worm

david, the red eared husband, has some very shiny ears.
and in the weary traveler, i would even say he glows.
