a tale of two taverns

this past holiday weekend, we took the lake express ferry from milwaukee to muskegon to spend the weekend with the staple family in grand haven michigan (more posting to come on that).

on our trip over, the summerfest/4th of july traffic wasn't as bad as we anticipated so we had an hour to kill in milwaukee. we made our first trip to the charming bay view community and had a couple tacos and beers at the palomino. it was a lovely afternoon, and a lovely setting to spend an hour or so (lots of motorcycles).

on saturday night in grand haven, we went to our favorite pizza place in the known universe, fricano's pizza tavern. it was as delicious this time as it has been the previous thousand or so (i have been going my entire life, my father has been going for 50+ years, and marta is doing her best to catch up). the pizza only comes in one size, there are only 5 toppings to choose from, they serve nothing other than pizza, they use paper plates, the line usually stretches onto the sidewalk, and it is well worth the wait.

these two establishments may sit on opposite sides of the great lake michigan, one is new and one is an old friend, but they each made excellent marks on this excellent weekend.

Fricano's is good stuff. I remember going there with the Shtaples as a young lad and being slightly frightened by the peppercorns.

Fricano's is the best pizza I have ever had. I've been going for 44 years and will not stop. They even let us bring our Vegan Cheese for non-dairy family members.
