independence day, grand haven style

for the fourth of july, we traversed lake michigan by boat to see how the people of grand haven celebrate the holiday. they did not disappoint.

our ferry ride aboard the majestic lake express was smooth, and afforded us beautiful evening views of milwaukee and the sunset. we sat on the back deck, let the wind run through our hair, and sipped golden mgds. glorious!

milwaukee, algonquin for the good land (if you click on the link, hang in there until minute mark 3:06. it's worth it)....

the sunset....

david soaks up the sun splashed vista from the back deck of the ferry....

once the sun goes down, it gets a little chilly on the lake. we headed inside to the sitting area, and anxiously awaited our arrival in muskegon, michigan.

once in muskegon, the independence day celebrations started immediately. when the clock struck midnight to ring in the first moments of the 4th of july, the staple family put a blanket down on the riverbanks of the grand river in anticipation of the fireworks. 24 hours early means good seats, and good seats we got.

the family chooses an ideal lawn spot...

the sunny holiday, looking out toward the great lake michigan.....

we ooh-ed and aah-ed at the musical fountain, the fireworks, and the grass fire that ensued. for those of you who are not familiar with the musical fountain, let this awe-inspiring video wow you. the bellagio fountain is nothing compared to this!

the fireworks were brilliant, and were lulled into forgetting all about the fireworks shortage.

the grand finale.....

for the second year in a row, the show did not end with the last firework. instead, grand haven treated us to a riverbank grass fire. it was beautiful.

there was also cake.

Who is that woman with her beautiful granddaughters?
Could that be her Birthday Cake?
