a sluggish run

a 5k run isn't supposed to be too hard, right? not the case in santa cruz. this morning we ran in the 7th annual 5k slug run on the ucsc campus. if a run can be uphill both ways in the snow on a bright, sunny, april morning in california, this one was. ok, so it was technically downhill for the first half, but it was definitely uphill (up-mountain) for the entire second half of the race. and that climb was run in a washed-out, ankle-killing, single-track bike trail.

this picture doesn't do it justice, but it is part of the slug run.

it really wasn't so bad, but there was a mascot to deal with. see some thoughts on the presence of mascots at 5k races at smoothdavehamm.com. it was harrowing.

naturally, we carb-loaded the night before with some lasagna.

and, like any good athlete, we followed the race with some pancakes, napping, and wine tasting (in that order). feels good to be running again.

At least it was sunny out and there were runners to follow. I had to run my second leg of the Great Midwest Relay at midnight in 50 degree rain through south Milwaukee with no other runners in sight and no real clue where I was going. Ohh, and it was 7.5 miles.
