i just found myself whistling a catchy tune, and couldn't figure out what it was. it wasn't from bridge over the river kwai or the disney version of robin hood. what was it?

...it was the theme music from beverly hills cop. after a little consideration, i think that might be one of the best movie scores of all time. i'm not talking about the soundtrack, which is good too. i'm talking about the score that keeps coming at you throughout the movie in slightly different "variations on a theme." it's just something to think about. here's a taste:

I agree. I always wanted there to be a short SNL skit dedicated to great scores. "And now, another exciting moment in movie score history." Then it would show the musician, in this case Harold Faltermeyer, sitting at a casio keyboard fumbling over lazy riffs and fleeting melodies. Then suddenly, out of the blue, the score would come shimmering out of the speakers one note at a time.

The song that first made me think about such an absurd sketch was Van Halen's masterpiece "Jump". Just listen to that one again and you will see what I mean.

Company, do you recall launching into full spread eagles whenever they played Jump at skating parties? Good times...
