james is nine!

james turned nine this month, and it was a birthday full of joy and celebration, despite the many disappointments and cancellations in planning his celebration.

the day started with a very special breakfast

and presents presents presents.

it was a BIG HAUL year, maybe to make up for the absence of in-person gatherings? i was most moved by ramona's spontaneous thought for his gift: bouncy shoes. he never asked for them, and she just thought it would be something he'd like, and then she found them on line and paid for them, and he was so grateful and she genuuinely experienced that satisfying joy of being a gift giver.
this kid was born to jump.

it was a school day, but the kids found time to make brownies in anticipation of the brownie sundae bar planned for after dinner.

at lunch, total surprise and shock struck when the doorbell rang and there were surprise visitors mormor and morfar, bearing gifts and love!
it was a short but sweet visit, and mormor got this cute photo of these two monkeys down by the tire swing.

that evening, we had a spectacular sunset in our brand new wind-shield deck, built out of our old dock pieces, followed by burritos, top gun, and brownie sundaes. it was pretty magical, just like james.

and as an aside, the next day a group of neighborhood boys were playing in our front yard on the slackline, and a photographer from the local newspaper drove by, saw them, and snapped these pictures. the top photo of asher and tristan was published in the paper, but we got a copy of the unused photo too, featuring larry and james in the background. i think the whole experience also felt special and magical for the kids.

The number nine in the foreground of James opening a present warmed my heart. Thanks for using the things that I used with my kids.
