nighttime

james had a pretty severe and sudden stomach pain the other night at 1am, right in the place where the appendix lives. after about 30 minutes of sobbing, screaming, clenching, and refusing to move, i drove him to the er, all wrapped in blankets and sad and scared. but, as luck would have it, he perked up when we got there, and felt mostly better. to be sure we weren’t missing something, he had an ultrasound of his totally perfectly normal abdomen, and then he pooped and was miraculously cured. the good news: he’s fine. the bad news: that was a rough night ... for me. at the hospital, james was 100% on, chatting, laughing, telling jokes, asking questions and telling the hospital staff about all the inventions he’s considering making. despite my bone-deep fatigue, i was laughing so hard. i mean, this kid....
