almost exactly one year ago, we won a night at the campus observatory at the kids elementary school silent auction fundraiser. it sounded so cool! but man, that's a tricky thing to plan for kids and friends: you need a clear night, and a dark sky, and a time of the year with good stuff in the sky to look at, but you can't keep the kids up too late...
well. we finally did it. gathered together under the night sky before the time change made sunset too late for the little ones. we got a clear night, and a clear view of some nebulla hanging out by the tip of orion's sword, a red giant in his belt, and pleiades (also known as the 7 sisters [ahem, subaru owners]) up there somewhere in the taurus constellation. TAURUS!
those graduate students hosting the event are the best. you can't see it in these pictures, but we packed that little observatory room with our friends, and their children, and it was BANANAS, and those graduate students were cool as cucumbers as our children climbed on and near their antique 150 year old telescope.
there it is: a pretty little observatory up on a hill on campus. such a wonderful place for a wonderful evening!

Taurus was the last of my series of family station wagons. It was by far the nicest, but after 20 some years of station wagons I was thrilled to have a four door sedan with a trunk. How boring that seems now. Give me a Mini convertible any day. As for your excursion with your family and friends to the observatory, I'm impressed. You kids know how to live life. Keep it up.
