dakota road trip, day 3

all badlands, all day. it was so fun.

morning sunrise view from the next bed over...

after breakfast, we hit up the highly recommended yellow mounds (exactly what it sounds like but somehow more magical than the name suggests) for some scrambling around in the early morning light.

we found the fossil trail and the big flat wide open castle trail and spent a LOT of time climbing around, playing hide and seek (no lie. all james' idea), and generally being adventurous.

after one finally ill-advised hike halfway up the short but steep saddle pass trail, we called it quits and headed back for lunch.

with food in our bellies, we forced the kids back out for a bit more hiking around and general merriment. they whined and groaned at first, but once we took door trail out through the "door" to a sea of climbable badlands, everyone got excited. there was a small grassy-topped butte in the distance, and we all wanted to get on top of it. so we found a path, figuring our way through trial and error, until we reached the butte and climbed up. check it out. you can't tell, but we're darn proud of ourselves in this picture.

and then, after another round of hide and seek with a distinctly castle-princess-feudal-battle vibe played intensively and exhaustively by james and ramona,

we rehydrated and headed back to the cabin.

at the cabin, some well earned ice cream and fluffy bed-and-tv-watching-time happened.

david and i even snuck out for a sunset view after the kids were asleep.

this national park is pure magic.
