yarrrrrrr matey

the annual fools flotilla happened again last weekend, and it was (as always) an absolute joy. it's just people, in costumes (most of them, at least), in boats (mostly boats, at least), moving together down the river behind a pontoon with a band playing water-themed music (yellow submarine, michael row your boat ashore, proud mary....), ending at a neighborhood festival at the mouth of river. it is a blast.

last year, the staples were vikings. this year, the staples were pirates. next year....we are out of aquatic themed group costumes for seafaring folk. we are open to your suggestions.

pirates on land...

pirates in the water...

where is james? you might reasonably ask...and many friends did. james was lying down on the bottom of the canoe, with his tiny pirate hat over his face to avoid seeing the man in the cow suit with the shark jaws on his head and a conch in his hand. this man terrified james. TERRIFIED him. he might have conch-sound-related-PTSD into the future.

out on the river, there were rocket ship canoes,

and living room canoes,

lizards and mermaids,

 and friends.

we came for treasure, and it turns out that our neighborhood is all the treasure we need.
