pageant magic

this year, christmas will be ushered in by all the usual activities (cutting down the tree, hanging the wreath, singing all the songs, eating cookies, etc), and now we can add a new tradition to our list of usual advent activities: the church pageant. for the second year in a row, we had little people in the little people christmas show. last year, ramona was an angel. this year, ramona was in the choir and james was a camel. it was adorable and heart warming, and the kids were so nervous, so brave, and so proud when it was over.

on saturday, the kids had rehearsal, and we got a glimpse of our little james the camel. dapper little camel.

the pageant started with the preschool choir, james front and center. we discovered some things: james' height is in the 90th percentile for age (according to his most recent physical with his pediatrician) and it really was obvious. also, we discovered that james knows all the words to all the songs. and that he is very serious and stands very still and takes a great deal of responsibility over his role as singer. our hearts melted. (which is good, because he's been, ummmm, very difficult to handle at home of late, and my heart had become less melty.)

the preschoolers then cleared out (presumably to don their costumes) and the choir filled the risers. check that little sweetheart in the front row.

here they come! serious camel, moving down the aisle with laser focus. he totally refused to look at me or smile.

once on stage, james was unfortunately stuck behind a kid who wore a giraffe costume (from his home supply, i think...). despite james' height, he just wasn't going to see over the giraffe head. he spent the remaining 20 minutes of the show peeking around the giraffe kid with a flummoxed look on his face. it was hilarious.

look at the little face peeking around the camel, all consternation, leering over jesus' manger.

full pageant glory

and what is a christmas service without a little silent night by candlelight (even if it is only first graders holding candles at 11:45 am)?
