the blue ridge parkway is a long slow winding drive through breathtaking beauty. from the front seat, it was all joy. from the backseat, there was some boredom, which eventually evolved into watching videos and playing games, interrupted sporadically with stops at road side views and visitor centers. this was a loooooong day of driving (car time totaled 9 hours, i think?) and the kids were awesome.
we stopped at a visitor's center all about geology, and instead found a battle marker from the revolutionary war. that's the thing about road trips, you guys. there is always lots to learn.
we got off the parkway in blowing rock, north carolina, and bought lunch at this little market, where we ran into a lady who is clearly the captain of blowing rock's welcome wagon, and she was just the nicest little thang, y'all. she took this picture, and made many many recommedations, and even shared some town gossip.
it was a good lunch, for real.

we checked out the "blowing rock" and read the tale of the indian maiden and her lover who blew back to her in the winds blowing up the valley after jumping to his death from the rock. the kids didn't believe the story. we are raising skeptics.

then we took to the interstate to reach staunton, virginia, where we landed in a beautiful downtown hotel, complete with rocking chairs, soft beds, and views of sunsets over the surrounding mountains.
