ah, the day i was SO SO SO looking forward to! trail ride for 90 minutes through the mountains, some in the ski area, some in the national forest outside of the ski area. we were treated to a gorgeous clear morning and some friendly horses. we arrived early enough to get in a long and rewarding horse chat session, complete with nose snuggles and forelock scratches.
look at this beauty. i got to ride her.
all lined up, all saddled up and ready.
ramona heard the wranglers talking about a horse named ramona, and asked very politely if she could ride ramona. i saw our lead wrangler sigh a little, and i was kinda bugged, like ....you know, go get the horse! ramona was thrilled and climbed aboard her big brown ramona, and then we quickly learned why the wrangler didn't want ramona the horse to join the trail ride. she is impossibly slow and needs a lot of kicks and swats to move. she got kicked in the head two years ago (!!), and basically now has horse dementia. it makes her sweet and gentle and easy and slow slow slow slow. ramona the person worked ramona the horse the whole ride. she absolutely learned how to ride a horse that day, and was darn proud of herself.

tiny little james riding that big horse gus was so cute. those stirrups are about as short as they go.

the ride

and the giant bull moose who wandered through the horse area as were were getting ready to ride out.....

after the ride, we headed over to the breckenridge skate park to watch some pros freeskate while a local jazz band played, as an installation in the week-long breckenridge international festival of the arts. it was great!
later, we hit up the pool to cool off, had some porch time, and then...
did some piggyback riding down to the bus stop where we...
boarded a free city bus...
to go check out this super cool troll up a mountain on a hiking path. also part of the arts festival, and super cool. it was built by a danish artist name thomas dambo, who now has 38 trolls similar but different to this guy, built in natural settings all over the world.

he was surrounded by giant piles of stones, and you can guess where our kids ended up...
the rocks generated a fine coating of rusty red filth,
which didn't come off in the river.
so we grabbed the next free bus home, while james entertained himself by climbing up the bus stop light pole...
and headed home for bath, dinner, a movie, and bed. solid day, colorado. thank you.
