rocky mountain high one last time, or day 5

the last day of a trip calls for a big last hike, and we picked a winner! we drove just a handful of picturesque miles south of breckenridge, which took us right up to the continental divide at hoosier pass. conveniently, there is a trailhead to a easy 4 mile loop from the parking lot on the side of highway. so, doughnuts in hand and water on our backs, we set off to climb a little mountain at hoosier pass.

hiking along the forest road in the pines, climbing up up up...

and just a little higher....

until we cleared the tree line and found that big wide open view just beyond a gorgeous alpine bloom. see those big peaks back there....lincoln and democrat peaks of the mosquito range.

after a little more hiking, we rounded a corner and found the top! a round scrubby hilltop, waiting to be summited.

there's mt quandary, another 14'er and an easy peasy summit. quandary, we're coming for you soon, with the kids!

coming back down and looking back up toward the top. what a great hike, and the kids loved it, and i love that.

we hiked back down to the car, and kept going south on highway 9 just a few more miles until we reached the sweet little town of fairplay, colorado. it's widely considered to be the town that inspired south park, the comedy central cartoon).

you remember...

there is even a little old town section, referred to as....

we found a library sale across the street, and spent our time and money there.

after a yummy lunch in town, we headed back into breckenridge and found another art installation. called the yeti.
obvi.

we had a close-up visit with a little hummingbird on main st,

we picked up some souvenirs, including the rabbit foot dangling from this sweet kid's ear...

and then proceeded to play a mean game of frisbee into evening with james' woven fold-able colorado-themed flag souvenir frisbee. it was a perfect way to end the summit county stay.

next day? drive, fly, screen time...

and cat cuddle.
