birthday celebrations

last week was birthday week, which is the most important week in birthday month. we celebrated particularly well that week:
birthday eve was spent with friends, who supplied this gorgeous spread of waterside refreshments...

birthday day was spent alone, biking, reading, running, and lunching (lunch was with david, so not totally alone), and it was glorious. at the end of the day, we had sushi and presents outside, and the kids helped me remember just awesome and strong 39 can be by flexing with me. :)

later, we puzzled with my new bday puzzle from my super amazing sister julia. puzzling is truly one of life's best quiet joys.

the next day, we went to concerts on the square, during which james became a lost child and was returned to us through an announcement at intermission stating "will the parents of six year old james staple please come to the stage", which i happened to overhear while i was in the midst of providing a relatively panicky description of james to the police. all is well that ends well, right?

but friday? friday i got my big gift. david and i drove to the airport after dropping the kids with mormor and morfar, and david finally let me play 20 questions to figure out what my gift was. big hint: i needed this document....

then we flew to toronto for a child-free 3 day weekend in cosmopolitan canada.

best. gift. ever.
