we love the guys in our lives. we really really do. but there are times when ramona wants to see her girl cousins in california, and i want to see a sister. last weekend, we went and did that by ourselves. it was magical. i learned a few things on this trip:
1. i still love california and the bay area specifically, but i am reminded of the urban hassles there and am finally, fully, openly glad that we no longer live there.
2. ramona is older than i thought, more mature than i recognized, manages disruptions and unanticipated events better than i expected, and is an all-around super awesome and capable 8 year old.
3. both the kids are lucky to have a sibling, who will be a forever friend, and who teaches them to handle discord, disagreement, and sharing of space and items. HOWEVER, when they are alone one-on-one with a parent, they are absolutely the easiest best versions of themselves.
4. i really wish i could see my sister and her family more often than i do.
so here's what we did:
landed in san francisco, rented a car, drove through the city to find some lunch breath in some ocean beach air, and take a picture with the bridge.
then we drove across that bridge and over mount tam and down into sleepy little bolinas to see our people. and there we stayed.
we ran around, saw banana slugs, held kitties, and had a wonderful day.
