i'm a day late on this birthday blog, but that is only because we have been busy all weekend long celebrating marta's birthday in the real world. it's tough to say exactly when the celebration started, but i'm going to say it was friday night when we went with our kids, and my sister and her wonderful daughters (rachel and maggie), to la fete de marquette, the second of the annual wil-mar neighborhood summer festivals. a highlight of the festival, as always, was the riding of the ferris wheel. this year, james and ramona were up for it, and we all had a great time.

on saturday morning, marta's wonderful parents picked up james and ramona and whisked them away for a fun-filled overnight trip to plymouth, wi, complete with late night smores around the campfire. by taking the kids for the day/night, marta's parents enabled us to take a short trip to spring green to enjoy some cultural entertainment that the kids just aren't really ready for yet. first stop was a tour of frank lloyd wright's estate and home, taliesin.

later saturday evening we had front row seats to see death of a salesman at american players theater, an outdoor theater that puts on wonderful plays all summer long. the show was absolutely amazing, the setting was breathtaking, but it was also completely emotionally draining (spoiler: death of a salesman is really sad and challenging).

on sunday morning (marta's actual birthday) we hit the road from spring green to plymouth to pick up the kids. the rural drive on mostly state and count highways (not interstate) was beautiful and made for a relaxing morning. when we arrived, we were so happy to see the kids, as we alway are after time apart (although the previous night's entertainment may have made us long for them a little extra this time). we enjoyed a brief birthday celebration with marta's parents, complete with a cake prepared with the help of james and ramona, and then we headed for home.
upon arriving home, and opening up birthday presents from us to marta, we headed over to friends' house for a cookout and more celebrating.

later sunday evening, marta and i headed back to la fete de marquette, this time without the kids, for an encore festival appearance.

it was a weekend too full of good stuff to waste time blogging. anyway, back to rubidium. the stable isotope of rubidium has a half-life of 49 billion years, more than three times as long as the estimated age of the universe. may that be a metaphor for the many more eventful birthdays and wonderful/important years of life ahead for the best woman i know. happy birthday, marta.
*i'm a little obsessed with my new prisma app right now, hence all the filtered/edited photos.
