last week, the kids and i spent an afternoon in the arboretum here in madison. the sun was bleeding through so many yellow maple leaves that it made our souls glow! the blue sky was so clear and big, and the birds and the trees and the grasses didn't seem to think that winter was imminent. it was such a very nice afternoon in a tranquil fall place, so we decided we HAD to get back to the arboretum with daddy so he could know the beauty of it this fall. the leaves hung on through the interim rain, and when november arrived on saturday, so did more sunshine. we hopped on our bikes and got back to the arboretum, and we were not disappointed. that place is radiant, no matter the season. i always get a tight feeling in my chest when i think that that is what my city, my county, and most of my state would look like if we hadn't showed up to pave the whole damn place and build big houses. but so it goes.
later, biking to have a late lunch and feeling the warmth of the sun and the joy of a chatty 5 year old behind me on her tag along, my bike suddenly exploded. not awesome. the derailer just snapped right off the gear housing. it was disappointing.
see that? can you see how this isn't really going to work?
so we walked to lunch, and then david biked home, got the car, dropped the bike at the shop and got us. the kids kept my spirits up by giving me lessons in zombie walking, and by being cool cats.
good weekend, folks, bike drama notwithstanding.
