put down the hand grenades

here is a drawing unearthed from the bottom of ramona's school backpack. it's a sweet depiction of the whole family. when i was in kindergarten, i struggled to remember all my family members in a family drawing, and it was an inglorious affair that haunted me for years, so i applaud her inclusivity. but what are mommy and daddy holding in the drawing? walkie talkies? (we have some and should dust those off, by the way). are the giant berries? not hand grenades?!

ramona says they are phones. 

and that was the moment that my heart broke. because this is what she sees. because this is what we do. we don't hold them to our ears and talk on them all that often, but they sure are glued to our palms. those kiddo drawings make for an effective looking glass.
