a winter triathalon weekend

a triathalon is usually a swim, a bike ride, and a run, right? but what if it's cold and snowy outside? the lake is frozen, the bike is packed away, and the sidewalks are a little slippery for a run. what replaces those activities? skating, cross country skiing, and downhill skiing. and if we can all agree on that, then we can say we did the winter triathalon this weekend. maybe you'd rather have competitive snow fort buliding in there, instead of one of the other activities. no problem: we did that too.

in one day, we cross country skied as a family, and later as solo adults in an attempt to get in a little kortelopet training. we skated hard with some friends, and it was awesome. then we built a fort. the next day, immediately after aggressively destroying the fort, we downhill skied until james laid down and refused to do any more.

look how cute these two little skiers are. cute, but certainly not stable on their feet.

a little later, ramona figured out how to not fall down, and she made it all the way around the park with me.

a girl and her friend, speeding around the ice, trying to catch their mommies. word of warning: these girls are fast skaters. and they will slam that metal thing into your ankles if you're not looking.

later, ramona won this adorable little race,

while this little guy took a seat and wanted to be left alone (or, as he says, "leave me by my lone!").

the kids started the fort in the afternoon, and the adults perfected it in the evening.

and for the last activity, ramona managed to both descend the hill on well controlled skis, turning smoothly and easily the whole way, and to ascend the hill on well controlled skis, getting into place in the rope tow line, and holding the rope without falling. she did that over and over, and i was shocked and shocked and pleased and shocked. james is also figuring out turning, slowing, and the rope tow. here is ramona and i coming up the rope tow from the bigger hill, which is a whole new world of steep for her.

I can't see the last picture, but the rest are terrific. It's great that you are all getting so much fresh air and exercise instead of being winter coach potatoes.

I saw it! It shows up on the computer, not my iPad. Go figure. She's doing great!
