this weekend, we grabbed winter by the lapels and smooched it right on the face. on the lips. because we are all loving winter here in the staple house.
we started the weekend with a date night, that included long strolls around town bundled up in down coats, and skating in slow romantic circles around the fancy new ice rink at the edgewater. it was nice.
on sunny saturday, we went to the park, scootered through the snow, and squeezed in a run for the adults. i even got in a few hand stands at the playground. so did james, which was adorable but un-photographed. use your imagination.
later, the kids pulled the wishbone from the turkey. james won, and wished for a secret super-hero related something. we're all holding our breath to see if his wish comes true.
the lagoon at tenney park is frozen over, and we celebrated with a late afternoon skate. here is ramona, skating awesomely and independently, with her friend. let me just take a minute to say this: it is amazing to watch a kid learn a skill, to naturally improve through hard work, practice, and simply getting bigger and stronger. i love it.
we also skied! downhill skiing is my favorite fun! we do it so infrequently, and this year we decided to fix that problem by joining the blackhawk ski club of madison. a few little hills, a few rope tows, and lots of little kids and their families, dedicated to learning to ski for fun. (there is also a wooden ski jump there, so fingers crossed that the kids get into that sport....)

it was so fun, and made fun simply because the kids actually enjoyed it. i was pretty worried that their first time on skis would be similar to mine: tears, frustration, disappointment, near injury, and finally being asked to return to the bunny hill where i belonged. i am happy and relieved to say that the tears were minimal, there seemed to be no disappointment, no injury, and no one was downgraded on the hill (because we never took them off the bunny hill, and don't intend to).
and if that wasn't enough (it seems enough) for one weekend, we also climbed aboard an old passenger train and rode to the north pole on the polar express. true to the book and movie, there was hot chocolate, the north pole, santa claus, and a small silver bell for all who truly believe.
the conductor punched tickets,
the kids marveled at the north pole out the window,
and santa brought the bells to some very excited kids (and one little 3 year old boy who was actively hiding from santa).
happy kids make happy parents. or is the other way around? anyway, i'm happy winter is here. i love it.

Wonderful! I'm happy that you're getting the kids into those activities. That's why I honestly say that I don't remember minding winter when I was young and my kids were at home.
Great Blog!
