marching bands and merry-go-rounds

today is the last of james' second year of life.  to send it out with a bang, we decided to combine james' two favorite things (at least the two things he talks about most) into a single outing.  we were a little nervous when we saw the thunderstorms in the forecast for this morning, but we were granted a reprieve (only cold and drizzly), so we went forward with our planned adventure.

first, we headed to union south for badger bash, uw's pre-home-game pep rally, which is full of activities for all ages, and capped off by a concert by the uw marching band.  i believe we have mentioned here before that james LOVES marching bands (and drum majors, and bucky badger).

a poor representation of what was a really good view of the band

when the final on wisconsin had been played, we took our cold and slightly damp children inside the union to get something to eat.  on a rather cold, pre-game morning, the lines for such things as brats, cheese curds, pizza, etc are very long, but the line for babcock ice cream is much shorted than normal.  so, we couldn't resist.

once we were filled up on america's dairyland's finest, we loaded the bike trailer back up, and pressed on to our next destination.

perhaps the only thing james talks about as much as marching bands, is carousels (or merry-go-rounds, as he calls them).  so, our second destination was the carousel at henry vilas zoo for one last ride this season (carousel closes tomorrow).  what can you say? james rode on the ostrich and elephant, ramona on a cougar and panther.

joy/fear

not many animals were willing to brave the elements, as the drizzle was shifting into something less bearable, so there weren't many animals to see.  after the carousel rides, we got back onto the bikes and into the trailer and headed home for a warm lunch and naps.  it was a fun, but exhausting morning.

can we let them nap in the garage?

after nap, trains were played with fireside.

a nice capstone, to a second year of life.
