apple bobbin'

we were in minneapolis this weekend visiting our minnesotan relations.  a lot of fun was had, which may be the subject of another blog post, but this post is focusing on one very specific, relatively brief, and extremely intense portion of the visit.

ramona and james' cousin caleb has apparently had his autumnal heart set on bobbing for apples for going on 13 months now, and it was decided that this would be the weekend for it.

first, a bobbing-appropriate vessel was filled with water and honeycrisps.

then, a significant amount of debate ensued over the appropriate water depth for maximizing the success of 2-4 year old apple bobbers.

should there be lots of water, so they don't have to go to far down?

should the water be shallow, so they can pin the apples against the bottom?

a few rules of the international apple bobbing association (iaba) were violated...

...and a few tears were shed, but all the kids eventually came up with apples.

in the end, the event's organizer was very satisfied.
