james is 9 months old today, which means he's been out of me for as long as he was in me. i much prefer him this way. he's been such a treat to have in the family! after 9 months, we can see his personality emerging: funny, happy and content, easy-going and easy-to-please, persistent and determined, and OH SO CLUMSY.
i'm certain that, immediately after the shutter closed on this photo, he slipped and slammed his forehead on something.
to celebrate our very big little guy's birthday (last single digit month milestone!), we donned our best party hats and had a picnic lunch in the park. that was all ramona's idea, and it was a good one. we had a blast. james even got a heartwarming birthday serenade from a motley crew of preschoolers on a class field trip to the park. i was about to take a picture of all these adorable 3 year olds lined up along the edge of the blanket singing their hearts out to a smiling baby who clapped along while wearing a pointy party hat, but then i hesitated, wondering about the appropriateness of taking a picture of other people's kids in a class that you don't know, and then suddenly, the moment was over. but it was very touching.
so was the whole picnic, really. james killed that plum.

Our family is big on fractional birthdays. I'm glad to see you enjoying James 3/4. Sweet of Ramona to think of a picnic celebration.
