grand haven, michigan, is home to a
coast guard unit, and is the official "coast guard city usa." given the scale of their coast guard festival every summer, i'd say they've earned the title. we went to grand haven to visit the staple family this weekend, and ramona got her first taste of the festival. well, not
literally her first taste; although they looked tempting, we passed on the corn dogs and elephant ears sold at the festival.
the mackinaw, a big ice cutter ship from cheboygan, michigan, was docked downtown and was open for tours. i wonder if people from cheboygan are aware that their city name is spelled wrong.

we happened upon the coast guard memorial service, complete with bagpipes, drums, boy scouts, and many service people sweating it out in their dress blues. all in front of the backdrop of several magnificent ships.

back at the house, ramona hammed it up with her cousins,

and made time for some pillow talk with a new friend.

we also had the rare opportunity to head to the north shore of grand haven, and get a peek at the pier from a different vantage point. it turns out, we like grand haven from all directions!

Does Ramona not like shirts? cause I get that impression.
Did you climb the dunes at the North Shore park? That's one of my favorite spots in the world!
JB: That's a good point. I don't think Ramona cares one bit what she wears. Apparently her parents don't like shirts.
MBD: We didn't make it to North Shore park, but I have fond memories of playing on those dunes as a child. I understand that they now have trails that allow you to hike from the dunes at North Shore Park all the way to PJ Hoffmaster.
There is not only a question about spelling Cheboygan, but also Mackinac.
