10 hour delay?

yep. amtrak had a 10 hour delay due to the big midwest snow storm. how do i know? my train, the "empire builder," was 10 hours late to pick me up in minneapolis.

it was also a little late bringing me to minneapolis. it turns out, it wasn't on time nearly half the time last month. here's a little look at some on-time stats from amtrak's website.
grumble, grumble, grumble.

we spent a long, long, loooong time in the station waiting for the train. and watching out the window. and waiting.

despite the delays, ramona enjoyed her first train ride.
after all, there was time to hang out in the observation car, snacking on puffs and watching the world go by.
on the way home, we upgraded to a sleeper car. this upgrade comes complete with sanity-restoring rest for both mothers and babies. it also includes dinner in the diner car (awesome). we were very ready for some hot food. amtrak thinks we need a LOT of newman's own salad dressing and butter. interesting.

a sleeper car also has a nice place for a diaper change (a bed. obviously.). ramona takes a peek at the mississippi river crossing mid-diaper change.

Emily and I had a similar experience with the empire builder line a couple years ago. We took it from chicago to the cities. It was about 5 hours behind and the weather was perfectly fine.
