a couple years ago i didn't show up for work on columbus day. in my defense, the patent office is closed on all federal holidays and i truly believed we were off when the patent office was closed. as it turns out, there are a few exceptions (i'm looking at you veteran's day). now, i take a little razzing when columbus day rolls around each year. the following scene is often referenced in said razzing (sorry for the commercial preceding the video).

I'm enjoying Columbus Day with The McFarlands who have Columbus Day off. The weather is beautiful in Western Michigan. We biked this morning and they are plaiyng golf this afternoon, before we head to the beach to fly some kites. I'd say Glen Ellyn, IL has the right idea. Let's take the day off.
