i have long believed that earth day was first celebrated on an island in the mississppi river in the heart of minneapolis because of this sign. it turns out, minnesota had a big party for earth day's 20th birthday, and it was on nicollet island. earth day was first celebrated all over the place in 1970, thanks to a scrappy wisconsin senator named gaylord nelson. go wisconsin!
