bad news for backyard chickens

we've never seen this guy in the backyard before. we are still a couple months away from getting our chicks, but i'm a little worried about how well this guy will get along with them.

anybody know what kind of bird it is? i'm looking at you krueger.

maybe ramona arrived this way, instead of by stork.

either a sharp-shinned or cooper's hawk. i'd guess a cooper's, as they seem a bit more common round these parts. they frequently like to pick off little songbirds, so a plump chicken would certainly be a treat. you can't let that happen.

glad to be of nerdly assistance...

if the chickens are wearing diapers, it might be untasty for the hawk (just an idea)

We had Guinea fowl and chickens in MO. and everything was fine for many years, then occasionally an owl would catch wind of their roosting habits... and it would literally be night after night for a whole week until the flock was decimated the owl would visit and destroy one of our birds. then it stopped for another year or so. I think you will be fine if they are in chicken wire, then you only have to worry about crafty critters like foxes and racoons, hawks and other raptors dont have a chance against chicken wire. they will be enclosed the whole time right, or were you planning on letting them go in the yard, because if you were, chickens could easily jump your fence... I'm just saying...

Also, kudos for having a non-baby post so soon after your new addition, our blog has turned into one big baby slideshow (and I am not torn up about it by any means) however, I fear that in target audiences not interested in how cute my baby it, viewership may have gone down...

I agree with Matthew; either Cooper's or sharp-shinned. I am suprised to not see banding on the tail though. It is usually visible on both sides somewhat.
