chicago manhole covers

we were in chicago for the day yesterday (more on that trip to come). we did a whole lot of walking around the city. while we walked passed, over, and around many many manhole covers, i didn't discover too many very unique ones.

there are a lot of these

and these

this seemed to be a rarer find. i actually like this one quite a bit.

if you are in chicago and come upon a spiffier manhole cover, let me know. now that the manhole on halsted is gone, finding a good one in chicago is a bit more of a challenge.

I am an artist here in Chicago and I wondering if anyone knows how I could possibly get access to a Chicago manhole cover for a few hours to make a rubber mold of it.

Thanks.

I searched manhole covers in Chicago and found your blog. I am looking for some history of manhole covers in Chicago. I have been excited about the possibility that the covers like the one you found were created during the WPA art thingy. These covers are dissappearing slowly. There are a whole bunch that have got to be from the same creative effort. FYE, I have a website with many of my artwork with the manhole covers around Chicago.
