x-country x-mas

the hoofers ski and snowboard club had a big ski sale at memorial union today. the sale was the perfect opportunity to buy christmas presents for each other, as well as dive into the deep end of a sport we have very little experience with. we bought cross country skis, boots, and poles.

then we went skiing, novice style. olin-turville park on the shores of lake monona has some nice little trails for beginners like us. we had a great time.

some canada geese found a little spot of unfrozen lake in which to get together and ignore their migratory instincts.

anybody have any tips on turning and going downhill at the same time?

It's definitely a challenge and, as I'm sure you've figured out, you need to resist the urge to sink in the "edges."

The trick is to take a bunch of little baby steps, rotating your skis a tiny bit each time. It feels hugely unnatural, but if you keep your feet flat, it'll get the job done.

Wow- look at all that snow. Here's to you guys enjoying a "white Christmas"! Have fun on the skis. Were you sore the next day? If you say no I'll be jealous of how in shape you are, so just say yes. Also, I posted on an earlier blog a question about how the Avenue fish fry was - curious if it'd be worth hitting next time we're in town.

the fish fry at the avenue is good, but the atmosphere is incredible.

we definitely had some pains in unusual places after the skiing.

Looks like fun. To turn you do a snowplow, but with no edges. No problem!
