as some (maybe most) of you are probably already aware, we are going to be relocating from santa cruz, ca to madison, wi. yes, we are returning to the fair city where we met and were wed. we have rented a house on the near east side, and the lease there starts may 1. in two weeks we are going to say goodbye to santa cruz and drive back to the homeland. since we can't get into our house until may 1, and all of our belongings will be in a moving truck until then, we are going to take a short road trip on our way back home. as some of you may recall, we took a similar road trip on our move from madison to santa cruz a year and a half ago, a trip we lovingly refer to as the gwrt or great west road trip. for the 2008 version we plan to take a more southerly route and hit up some of the national parks of the southwest. the plan is to visit death valley,
las vegas (not a national park per se),
the grand canyon,
zion,
bryce canyon,
arches,
denver,
and des moines.
we have dubbed our moving adventure the great southwest road trip. we will do our best to blog about it as the trip progresses.

wow, thank God you didn't leave Iowa out, it will be so great in comparison with all those "less than" places you are visiting!
Any chance you can take a route through Steamboat Springs or even Buena Vista? The Baumgartner's would love to see The Staple's.
bring on the raw vegan smoothies. bring on the doodlebunny. 'cause we're a comin' to steamboat (or buena vista)
You're going to stop in Des Moines?! I'm so jealous!
i think everybody needs to lighten up on iowa and des moines. this blog is going to document just how lovely a drive through iowa can be. mark my words.
OK, that it, David and Marta, I award you honorary "great plains natives" status for your consistent promotion of NE and IA. Next you'll have to explore the Pride of the Plains, KS. The GSwRT sounds like a good time.
If you find yourself in Western Colorado you are so welcome to park your moving vehicle de jure in our driveway and even sleep in a real bed for a night or two......hope you have a safe and(un)eventful journey back to the homeland!

thanks so much for the lodging offer, but baumer (see above) beat you to the western colorado stop. we'll be thinking of you when we are witnessing all that geology and wondering how it happened.
