independence day (part 2)

the city of santa cruz doesn't have an official, city-sponsored fireworks display; however, the tens of thousands of people who flock to the beaches of santa cruz for the fourth put on the most amazing display of illegal fireworks we have ever seen. the scpd spent all day closing off roads, manning check-points, and apparently confiscating fireworks in what is either a futile attempt to stop the display, or an attempt to appear as if they tried to stop the display. take a look at this video to witness the scope of this event. fireworks went on at this pace for several hours.

Got to love illegal fireworks! Natalie and I witnessed a similar event on a multi-state scale. We had to work on Thursday so we drove back to Chicago from Graps on Wednesday night. We got on the Skyway about 9:45 and witnessed about an hours worth of backyard displays over about 45 miles. It was really crazy, and much more interesting than any planned city fireworks. There were 10-20 explosions going off in every direction at any given moment. It was kind of hard to keep my eyes on the road, which was not good condidering the thick smoke drifting over the highway.

Seems as though your fine city has a highly effective police force.

Reminds be of New Year's Eve in Puerto Rico without the guns.
