breakfast

this morning we had breakfast at linda's sea breeze cafe, in our neighborhood of seabright.

as usual it was quite delicious, but also as usual there was a long wait. you can see marta enjoying a cup of joe as she waits in the left of the picture. a good breakfast is something that you often will have to wait for, and it is something we are willing to do. it isn't the same suffering as waiting for a table for dinner. it is kind of part of the experience. other breakfasts worth waiting for: cleveland's diner in madison, wi and the sweet water cafe in marquette, mi.

in case you were wondering we had a turkey, avocado, and cheese omlette, and a mushroom, cheese, green onion, and egg white scambler. delicious.

whale watching

although it saddens us to see a great mammal, such as this one, rotting on the beach, it is all part of the circle of life.

axel foley

i just found myself whistling a catchy tune, and couldn't figure out what it was. it wasn't from bridge over the river kwai or the disney version of robin hood. what was it?

...it was the theme music from beverly hills cop. after a little consideration, i think that might be one of the best movie scores of all time. i'm not talking about the soundtrack, which is good too. i'm talking about the score that keeps coming at you throughout the movie in slightly different "variations on a theme." it's just something to think about. here's a taste:

a sluggish run

a 5k run isn't supposed to be too hard, right? not the case in santa cruz. this morning we ran in the 7th annual 5k slug run on the ucsc campus. if a run can be uphill both ways in the snow on a bright, sunny, april morning in california, this one was. ok, so it was technically downhill for the first half, but it was definitely uphill (up-mountain) for the entire second half of the race. and that climb was run in a washed-out, ankle-killing, single-track bike trail.

this picture doesn't do it justice, but it is part of the slug run.

it really wasn't so bad, but there was a mascot to deal with. see some thoughts on the presence of mascots at 5k races at smoothdavehamm.com. it was harrowing.

naturally, we carb-loaded the night before with some lasagna.

and, like any good athlete, we followed the race with some pancakes, napping, and wine tasting (in that order). feels good to be running again.

one small step for man, one giant leap for our blog

so, this is our new blog page. it should be as similar in style as possible to the old blog, but with some suped-up functionalites that make it...well...like all other blogs have been for some time (you can now post comments). we still don't have our new camera yet, so for now we have to settle for this old shot we took of the moon landing. the camera should be here any day now, and then the website updates should start coming rapid fire. we hope you enjoy our new blog, and we look forward to hearing from you.
